Cultural Hub Gateway Project    with Integrated Market
  and Retail

This was an open international competition to design a cultural hub in a derelict industrial area of Walsall. Developed at O’Connell East Architects, the scheme aims to mimic the nature of the surrounding maritime and industrial history of the area.

The organic forms mirror the waves of the nearby docks and creates urban parkland which rises and falls with the shape of the building itself. Created below are market areas enabling local retailers to own prime commercial space. As the site drops the forms rise and larger units are created with gateway street frontages.

The Lex site is adjacent another plot being developed by Urban Splash as part of a masterplan to regenerate Walsall waterfront.
