Culcheth, Warrington

A project that takes a fresh look at this semi-rural site which sits on the edge of Culcheth, bordering the Cheshire Green Belt. Two previous applications had failed to get consent so the project required a new approach.

The brief was to redevelop the existing site into a new, high quality residential scheme containing three new family homes including the upgrading and re-design of associated landscaping. The development is sited in a location deemed sensitive to the surrounding rural context and the adjacent houses, which includes a large converted barn into multiple dwellings.

The proposals were granted consent by Cheshire East and will provide much-needed new housing to the area.

Our approach was to retain more of the open space for communal landscaping and position the new houses so that they reduce the visual impact on the neighbours. The building lines, site views, heights and massing are all driving factors in the design of the new proposals. The three new dwellings are therefore carefully considered additions to the site that avoid over-development or negatively impacting the existing context.
The majority of the site is designated for new landscaping, so that the actual developed area is kept to a minimum and is surrounded by green open space.
The intention is for the new dwellings to be low impact but with a contemporary take on traditional village cottages, whilst still providing well-proportioned accommodation for modern families.
