A bespoke, low carbon house in Glossop featuring a cantilevered design to maximise views out towards the Peak District.
The new proposal seeks to create a bespoke, low energy one-off house that responds to the semi-rural setting and is sensitive to the surrounding context and environment. Conceived as a contemporary re-imaging of a traditional agricultural building and inspired by the long history of the site as farming land.

The site is located to the north of Glossop town centre and is positioned at the edge of the built-up residential area, adjacent the open fields and agricultural landscape that forms The Ashes farm. The location has a rural feel characterised by mature trees, hedgerows, a single track country lane and views to the south over the valley and hills beyond.

The house is arranged on the site in a simple rectilinear form that is largely driven by the existing topography, orientation and views. The lower level volume containing bedrooms is aligned east-west across the top of the site to follow the contours of the plot and to reduce the amount of excavation and groundworks required. In contrast the upper level containing main living spaces is arranged on a north-south axis and is positioned at one end of the volume below, cantilevering out at both the front and the rear.

The house has been designed to be net zero in terms of operational carbon and will adopt a fabric first approach with high levels of natural wood fibre insulation and high levels of air-tightness. It will incorporate an ASHP, MVHR and solar panels along with rain gardens forming part of a SuDs system across the site. Biodiversity on the plot has been enhanced with new tree planting, new hedgerows and a sedum flat roof.

Low embodied carbon materials have been chosen where possible and include timber cladding, stone bricks and lime mortar with interiors adopting wood wool board, clay plaster and birch plywood.
